Baptism

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

- Acts 2:38

The Sacrament of Baptism is often called "The door of the Church," because it is the first of the seven Sacraments not only in time, but also in priority. The reception of all other Sacraments depends on it. Baptism is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation, the other two being the Sacrament of Confirmation and the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Once baptized, a person becomes a member of the Church.

Role of the Community

Baptism is an ecclesial event - the sacramental act by which the community welcomes others into its life.

Godparents

The godparent must be a practicing and Confirmed Catholic at least 16 years old.  The godparent cannot be the mother or father.  You can have either one or two godparents.  If you have two godparents, then one would be male and one would be female.  A baptized person from a non-Catholic church can act as a witness, but only in the company of the godparent.  (Code of Canon Law, nos. 873, 874, 890, 891)

Baptism Preparation for Infants

Preparation for parents, including discussion of the signs, symbols and meaning of baptism, is required prior to the celebration of the Sacrament, unless they have had the preparation in the past few years.  (Preparation for baptism may be done by watching at least a couple of the videos under "Introduction to Baptism - videos".)

Please call the pastor (306-789-8276) regarding the planning for the baptism.
